About

The Los Altos Post 558 was formed in 1938 by World War I Veterans from the community, who built the Post and opened the doors in 1940.  Originally named after resident Lt. Col. John J. Howard, an illustrious Spanish-American war hero, the Post was renamed to reflect the Los Altos community of veterans in 2006.

Veterans from Los Altos and the region meet regularly on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. with social time at 6 p.m.  The Post focuses on services to Veterans, Community & Children & Youth.

News

The Post was granted historical landmark status by the City of Los Altos on March 8, 2022.  The Post was instrumental in the founding of the City as the place where the town organizational meetings were held and was a valuable resource to the community for over 80 years.

In 2022, the Post is expanding its existing disaster preparedness services to become the first "node" as a care and comfort refuge for the residents and employees in the town's Neighborhood Emergency Network.

The Post will be remodeling the Clubroom, and will begin fundraising for a new roof and other improvements in 2022.  Donations may be made to the Los Altos American Legion Charities, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, by mail to 347 First Street, Los Altos, CA 94022.

Events

Join us for two events on Veterans Day 2022 in Mountain View and Los Altos.
Join us on Friday, November 11, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 12 Noon at the Mountain View Veterans Memorial located at Eagle Park, 650 Franklin St., Mountain View. The theme is a sober one with a silver lining "Be the One: Mental Health Support for Veterans - End the Stigma." Our speakers will give hope and healing, and you will get to hear about service dogs. Speakers include Mayor Lucas Ramirez, VA Chaplain Fred Tittle (USMC RET), and Operation Freedom Paws (pairing rescued dogs with veterans in need as a service "team"). This is an outdoor gathering in a park with chairs. After the event, please visit the nearby Library (walking distance) to view pieces of the Berlin Wall located outside the entrance. The event is organized by the Mountain View Veterans Memorial Committee, American Legion Los Altos Post 558 and Admiral Moffett Post 881. Visit mvveteransmemorial.org for more information.
Then join us from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Veterans Community Plaza at the corner of Main Street and State Street in downtown Los Altos. In the event of rain, this event will relocated to our American Legion Hall, located at 347 First Street (across From Draeger's parking lot) in Los Altos.

Veterans Craft Faire. Support Veterans by shopping for holiday gifts at the Veterans Craft Faire on Saturday, November 12, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Santa Clara Post 419, located at 958 Homestead Road, Santa Clara. Visit alpost419ca.org for more information.
